An investigation of leprosy in the German ethnic group of Colonia Tovar in Venezuela. IV. Clinical findings and variations in the Mantoux and Mitsuda reactions observed during five years after BCG vaccination of Mitsuda-negative contacts.

چکیده
Five years of observation of the group of originally Mitsuda-negative contacts living with sources of infection of the lepromatous type in the rural area of Colonia Tovar have now been completed. It is therefore considered proper to report now on the clinical findings and the changes in the tuberculin and lepromin reactions since they were vaccinated with BCG in 1950. The group is believed to have been exposed to great danger of contagion both before and during the period of observation. The present communication extends a 'former one which was presented to the leprosy congress held in Madrid in 1953 (3), from which it differs by the longer period of observation.

Studies of leprosy in the German ethnic group of Colonia Tovar, Venezuela. V. The morbidity rates in BCG-vaccinated and unvaccinated groups during five years.
This paper is the fifth report of studies made in the leprosy focus of Colonia Tovar, settled by people of German ethnic stock. One group in this community was vaccinated with BCG, while the other remained unvaccinated. Both groups were exposed to the risk of contagion before and during the period of observation, which covers a period of five years beginning in 1950. The first two studies of th...

While investigations were in progress elsewhere in Venezuela on the modifications of the reactions to tuberculin and lepromin after BeG vaccination in groups of humans in leprosy-endemic foci (2). parallel experiments were made with hamsters and guinea-pigs at the Cabo Blanco Leprosarium. The results are reported here. The problem of lepromin sensitization in animals has attracted the attention...
متن کاملRisk-benefit assessment of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccination, anti-phenolic glycolipid I serology, and Mitsuda test response: 10-year follow-up of household contacts of leprosy patients.
INTRODUCTION Despite multidrug therapy, leprosy remains a public health issue. The intradermal Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, Mitsuda test (lepromin skin test), and anti-phenolic glycolipid I (PGL-I) serology are widely used in leprosy studies and have shown great epidemiological value. METHODS This longitudinal study evaluated the relative risks and benefits of these three tools by ...

Contact surveillance is a valuable strategy for controlling leprosy. A dynamic cohort study of leprosy contacts was initiated in 1987 at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. The objective of this work was to review the data on the major risk factors leading up to the infectious stage of the disease, estimate incidence rates of leprosy in the cohort and characterise the risk factors for the disease among th...
